Balmy in Black

When you need to be buttoned up, but it’s balmy… black linen has your back. Dressing professionally in the summer is tough – sweating through suits is not pleasant and walking in heels makes it even worse. On the days when you need to be professional, but the temperature is over 85 (more like over 100 in Houston…) I prefer black linen with a cropped sleeve – while more casual than a full formal suit, it still looks appropriate, and the dark color tones down the more casual blazer fabric and cut.

For this, I’ve paired the classic silk sheath top I wear all the time with black cotton cropped trousers, and a black linen cropped sleeve blazer. Combining the black pants and blazer with a cream sheath, shoes and camel bag keeps the outfit from being too dark, and the scarf pulls all the colors together – I found it this spring, and was very excited to add it to my collection – I think of scarves as the female tie equivalent, allowing the option to add color and intrigue to an outfit while expressing personality.

I found the blazer on resale a few years ago and love it for very hot summer days (those days when even walking from your car to an office induces sweat). The pants I snagged last January ‘18 at Saks on sale while on a trip to Miami – I wear them a ton (should have bought two pairs). The sunglasses were the first pair of designer shades I ever bought back in college – found them on resale at More Than You Can Imagine in Houston.

Don’t let balmy days keep you from looking your best in black.

All my best,
