Holiday Hot Toddy

Hopefully this is your last week on site this year, and as a result it is time for a treat. Take yourself to your hotel bar for an after-work drink or several. No matter if it’s tea, tonic, or tequila – closing out your year with some fun is a great way to cap off the work year and celebrate.

In general, making use of the hotel lobby bar when you’re onsite can be a good way to get you out of your hotel room. I often find I can easily become a hermit – traveling alone, without big project teams, with a ton of work to do I’ll easily get in a pattern of work, work out, room service and more work. But in reality, it’s good to make yourself be dressed and in public sometimes during the evening. On those days, I’ll take my laptop down to the hotel bar and work from there. I may grab a glass of wine or whiskey (a California Pinot Noir or a High West Whiskey Old Fashioned are my favorites) or just a hot tea dependent on my mood and how productive I need to be.

As a single female, I don’t typically go out to other bars around town when traveling for work unless I’m going for dinner too, but the hotel bar is usually a much safer option. And if you aren’t wanting to interact with anyone other than the bartender / server… I’ve found keeping your laptop with you (even if you aren’t planning to work) is typically a good way to keep unwanted attention away while still letting you benefit from the energy of being around people.

For the last full work week of the year – celebrate your accomplishments, raise a toast to all that has come and has yet to come, and enjoy!

All my best,
