Meticulous in Midnight
Dressing well (much like being a great consultant) requires a meticulous focus on the details. Ensuring that each piece represents you well, and collectively works together with the other items to form a great looking outfit – longer-term ensuring that the wardrobe you are cultivating is projecting an image that matches the personal brand you want to develop.
This detailed and planned approach to building a corporate wardrobe won’t happen overnight, but by being thoughtful with your dressing you will find that over time you’ll have a great foundation that you can rely upon. In consulting, we don’t need a lot of tools – mainly just a laptop, notepad, and coffee. So, consider your wardrobe your tools of the trade, tools that help establish credibility before you even begin to deliver upon engagement expectations. In consulting, we have to justify our bill rate every day; best to be meticulous with all the details, not just the digital ones.
For this outfit I’m wearing a pair of navy cropped trousers that I found last summer at Neiman’s, I already had similar pants in black and another pair in white and love how they offer a professional look without worrying about rainy or snowy days and having wet hems. I wear them all the time.
I discovered this blouse (by the epitome of meticulous style – Carolina Herrera) years and years ago while hunting through resale. It was brand new with tags still on. At the time it was slightly too small – I’d been on the road a lot and not working out enough, slightly too expensive – even on resale it was pricey, and didn’t go with anything else in my wardrobe – back then I had nothing else in navy to go with it. I decided to throw out all of my dress code ‘rules’ because I loved it so much, and knew one day it would fit, I would eventually get the value out of it to justify the cost, and would have other complimentary pieces to pair it with. Fortunately, I was right, and now I wear it regularly – loving it every time. I don’t often recommend spending too much, buying things that don’t quite fit, or acquiring items that have nothing to go with them – but if you find something you absolutely adore, sometimes you have to go for it.
My shoes are also almost brand new from resale, think I found them in ’08 – they are a great option when I want a more burnished gold look instead of classic brown.
I treated myself to my scarf after realizing how much I wore my black & white version, and decided I needed a navy option to go with other wardrobe pairings.
This outfit is great when I need to be very polished, but a full suit isn’t required – perfect for days where I have important meetings with established clients where I’m not presenting, or days where I have lunch meetings, or am planning fun after hours cocktails / dinner with colleagues.
Focus on the details, and you’ll always look meticulous.
All my best,

Sometimes we stun, sometimes we’re sleep deprived – but no matter what the day brings we have to be savvy; and self-care helps! Sitting in my hotel after 38 hours with no sleep – took a red eye in to my client last night, and went right to work and have been working...
Get to go out after work to a gallery or girls’ night? Get glam! Sometimes there’s fun plans post work – but you don’t have time to go home to change. Grab a fun top that doesn’t wrinkle and swap out your earrings. Pairing a classic black pencil skirt and your heels...
Lounging in lobby’s isn’t a luxury, but rather likely for consultants. Late nights working with team members, early mornings prepping for the day’s presentations, the list goes on. The number of hours I’ve spent in hotel lobbies is large! While not all lobbies are as...
